LITTORAL WARFARE COMPLEX
Structural engineering for the Littoral Warfare Research Complex at the Naval Surface Warfare Center, the Navy’s premier organization responsible for research, development, testing and evaluation of systems applicable of littoral warfare and coastal operations. The purpose of the waterfront facility is to provide launch and recovery capabilities for various research platforms, including the research and development of high tech warfare instruments. It is equipped with a bridge crane, water test tanks, dock, and hoist and boat ramps.
This Design-Build project utilized the Tilt-Up design because of its inherent resistance to blast impact, and its ability to satisfy the government-mandated progressive collapse requirements. Both are important elements that entail a unique structural design, allowing for redistribution of floor loads in the event of a sudden failure to a primary exterior supporting element. The project included relocating utilities and site demolition. The waterfront site includes a dock, boat ramp, hoist, rip rap seawall along the frontage of the site, and on-site storm water management. Other site features included special concrete and a research deep pool, with patio and railings. This project has been awarded an Excellence in Construction award by the Associated Builders and Contractors First Coast Chapter and the National Design-Build Award for the best public sector building under $15 million from the Design Build Institute of America and is LEED Certified Gold.
