Swanquarter Oyster Breakwater Shoreline Restoration
GMHILL provided design and construction services for the Swanquarter Oyster Breakwater Shoreline Restoration Project. The team created a living shoreline and habitat that protects the shoreline and access to the pier. The project was funded through resiliency funding in partnership with The Nature Conservancy (TNC) of North Carolina, which wanted to keep and modify the existing structure, which required GMHILL to design a new wall in front of the existing structure. Data from a 100-hundred-year-storm event, which included 50 mph winds with a 1-hour duration, was used against the design footprint of the existing structure to determine the necessary footing size to withstand storm events. Permitting was conducted with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) for the new design documents. Due to the work site’s location, GMHILL produced an Environmental Protection Plan that included having an Environmental Manager to coordinate our compliance with federal, state, local, and installation requirements.
