St Johns Country Day School Expansion
St. Johns Country Day School is one of the top college-preparatory schools in the Jacksonville area. Located in Orange Park, Florida. Approximately 40,000 SF of a new two-story structure was designed and constructed for high school students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The program called for multilevel lecture halls with elevated seating lecture hall, classrooms and laboratory classroom spaces, and administrative areas.
GM HILL provided the design based on load-bearing concrete masonry walls for the first and second-floor walls. The new second-floor structure was comprised of steel bar joists with a non-composite metal deck and concrete slab. An exterior corridor on the West face of the new building with similar design materials was utilized with the addition of wide flange beams and steel columns wrapped with cmu and brick to match the appearance of the existing buildings on campus. The roof structure was comprised of either pre-engineered wood roof trusses. The foundations for the building were conventional shallow foundations. The structure was designed based on High Velocity Wind loads according to the Florida Building Code and flood-prone area. In response to the high wind and seismic design requirements, impact-resistant, insulated, tinted, Low-E windows provided protection from storms and sunlight damage to the archives and processing areas.
